Chapter

Eighteen

As he ran, Roran felt the ground rumbling, almost as if something was trying to push him down. But it wasn’t that. The ground was softer than it had been. Spongier, in a way.

“You have to fight through it,” Lunal said. “They have control over this. Especially with so many of them, they probably are going to be able to hold us, so you need to do everything you can to outrun what they might try to do.”

“What exactly do they have control over?”

“Oh, the density of the ground, the firmness of it. If we were in the mountains, and thankfully we are not, they could cause the stone to crumble around you.”

A flash of light and heat radiated from Tiveran. It was followed by a burst of cold air.

“What are you doing?” Tiveran snapped.

“Hot then cold,” Matthew said. “If you get something hot enough, and then you freeze it, you can hopefully shatter it.”

“It won’t work like that on stoncrags.”

“How do you know if you haven’t tried it?”

There was a strange creak that sounded like something shearing, and then an explosion. It was an unusual and unnerving sound. Then the ground shook even more. But Roran could move faster.

He raced ahead. More blasts of light were followed by cold. By the time they reached the outskirts of the village, Roran had felt both Tiveran and Matthew attacking nearly half a dozen times. With each one, he was surprised to hear the odd crackling sound, and he had to believe that the combination of attacks might actually be making a difference.

“Get inside the village,” Tiveran said.

He looked harried, and his eyes were wide as he jerked his head from side to side to look around. Then, a trio of large, muscular men from the village came striding toward Tiveran. They were all armored, with swords at their sides, and they seemed as if they were not at all surprised by the sudden appearance of Tiveran.

“Stoncrags,” Tiveran said, “probably a dozen. I don’t know if we were able to neutralize any of them. We might have stopped a couple, but they’re heading straight toward us.”

“The protections around the town will hold,” one man said, glancing around. “Why do we have stoncrags on the plain, and why are they coming to attack?”

“Don’t know,” Tiveran said. He turned and sent another beam of powerful light outward, followed by heat. Then Matthew blasted out his own wave of cold air after it.

The trio of men moved forward, and Roran felt the pickup of wind and then the surges of heat that followed it. There was something else, though he couldn’t quite tell what it was. Because of it, he knew better than to try anything of his own.

These were all powerful men. Maybe not at Tiveran’s level, but very near it.

“Come on,” Lunal said. “We should go inside. We can’t do anything here, anyway. Well, maybe you can?”

“I doubt it,” Roran said.

“I’m not sure. But even if you could, I don’t know that you should.
